Review of St. Elmo's Fire (1985) by Steve G — 20 Jun 2008
Great nostalgia. Great music. Great hair. The Brat Pack in full bloom. It captures the post-university experience (travails) better than any moviei I've ever seen. Yet though the characters at times were cool, they were for the most part were bratty, irritating, indulgent & unscrupulous.
I would never let my kids hang out with hollywood schleps like these. screwing or snorting sums up most of their activity (with the occasional exception of rocking, which I heartily approved & which Rob Lowe made into an art).
But there were scattered in between all the debauchery moments of sincerity & concern. It did address some issues & an oft-neglected demographic, so kudos for that. The Emilio/Andy McDowell kiss was hugely redemptive! That & John Parr! A-booga-booga-booga-booga.
Wah-ha-ha-ha!
