Review of Spy Game (2001) by Tony B — 28 Dec 2007
Very good hybrid of spy thriller and drama, primarily because it hovers between the two. It's got a great narrative through-line, cleverly only really showing Brad Pitt's character through flashbacks, while Redford plays a belter as the retired spook who risks it all to extremely cleverly save his protege.
Top slimy support from Stephen Dillane really helps too. This is one of Tony Scott's better movies no question - yeah, it circles cliche a touch and it's got that pop video slickness that plagues Scott the Younger's work but here it actually works damn well.
Pitt will end up like Redford, the ageing sex symbol movie star, both good actors who work off each other well. Yep, recommended film and one that holds up well with repeat viewing.
