Review of Spy Game (2001) by Abdallah E — 12 Aug 2008
This film was marketed as a defining moment in cinema where one of the last generation's pretty and gifted performers passes the torch to one of the next generation's pretty and gifted performer, which ultimately hurt what turns out to be a pretty keen piece of covert storytelling.
Redford's graceful and Pitt's youthful energy spark a good chemistry that seems a bit stumped by a screenplay that keeps their characters too apart for them to develop any further than mentor/student.
It's more about Redford's character anyway and aside from a few forgivable plot cliches he and the cast under the flashy (but not as flashy as his brother's style) direction of Tony Scott, craft a solid thriller that relies less on explosive action and more on the mental cat and mouse of a CIA agent working with and against the forces at Langley.
