Review of Spy (2015) by Wayne K — 23 Sep 2015
Taking a playful swipe at the espionage genre while also demonstrating that females can be just as tough and dependable as their male counterparts, Spy genuinely surprised me in how many jokes it could cram into its 2+ hour runtime.
It's not as memorable or intelligent as Austin Powers, but possesses the same wit and charm that made it a hit. Melissa McCarthy, an actress I've honestly never been fond of, is actually very likable here as the reluctant hero who comes to embrace and even relish in her deepening situation.
The film works because the humour is kept consistent, the sentiment is never overdone and our central character is constantly developing to adapt to her environment, and discovers abilities she never knew she had along the way.
It may lean too heavily on fat jokes and rapid-fire profanity at times, but for the most part it's engaging, fun, and above all, downright hilarious.
