Review of Spy (2015) by Mandela W — 02 Feb 2017
In recent years summer movies have either been filled with many dissapointments or films that just overall sucked or wasn't appealing at all. Spy in 2015 was one of those films I over looked because it didn't grab my attention and it looked kinda silly. of course 2 years later I decide to check it out and also see why it got nominated for a golden globe and critics choice award. Turns out I should never haved ignored it in the first place. One of more great takes on a beloved genre in film.
Melissa McCarthy plays Susan Cooper a CIA employee who works at the desk. When a mission with a field agent she works with goes wrong, Cooper makes the request to her higher ups to go out in the field herself and complete the mission Fine was one. She finds herself up against the stylish but wicked Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne) as she is part of a major black market sale of nuclear weapons.
This is a great comedic ode to the bond films! A very well written story from feig. there was a nice twist near the end that was fun to watch. Melissa McCarthy does a phenomenal comedic job here. this was a really well developed character with substance and an arc. Rose Bryne was fantastic and wickedly funny. She and McCarthy had a superb chemistry together. if rose byrne is to play villain this is the one for her. I couldn't believe but Jason staham was actually hilarious. he had so many funny lines and seemed to be able to hold his own with all of the comedic actors in the film.
Great direction from paul feig as well. He managed to bring out the best in McCarthy, Bryne and Staham. Compared to most comedies these days he has a nice touch that isn't too over the top, its more creative if any thing. great score by Theodore Shapiro. well choregraphed action scenes. the kitchen fight was spectacular.
This definitely was worthy of a golden globe nod. Such a wonderfully done action comedy.
