Review of Spy (2015) by Another V — 19 Jan 2016
Spy is a spy spoof comedy from writer and director Paul Feig. He has put together a fun cast, with Melissa McCarthy in the lead as agent Susan Cooper.
Especially for me as a heavier woman, it's gratifying to see McCarthy kick lots of butt and ultimately save the day.
While Cooper starts off as sidekick to agent Bradley Fine, upon his unfortunate demise she ends up being called upon to go out into the field, for the first time. Hot shot agent Rick Ford isn't going to let her do it alone; he wants the glory for himself, but somehow Cooper ends up saving Ford's butt, over and over. It's fun.
Cooper ends up saving the life of ruthless criminal Raina Boyanov, whom she is supposed to be shadowing. Her relationship with Raina gets more complicated; they even seem to be bonding. Eventually Cooper's friend and coworker Nancy from the basement shows up in the field to help her, so there is some girl power going on.
Just as James Bond tends to romance some of his opposite sex coworkers, Cooper has some connecting moments with her male coworkers, moreso toward the last half (in the first half, agent Fine ruthlessly dashes any hopes for something more with him).
Near the end, after Cooper miraculously saves the day, guess which lucky coworker gets to take her out to celebrate.
Just when you think it ends on a happy girl power note, there's one more surprise James Bondlike scene. Hilarious!
