Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Jj M — 26 Oct 2013
I know this is meant to define what 'thrash' really is and thus convey a message that firmly puts that 'thrash' in the 'for the bin' basket. But some part of me believes that the director and her young protaganists (some of whom have a tendency to turn up as 'thrash' in the media quite regularly) enjoyed doing this! It's also extremely cliched and I mean extremely.
The figure of James Franco's despicable character pushes the boundaries of believable and then slips into farcical nonesense. Can anyone take him seriously as an actor anymore? Clearly there is a substantial audience out there that will flock to the screen to see young girls in bikinis and occassionly have alcohol licked off their bodies and it is this exploitation that Korine should be denounced for.
I had a very different opinion of Kick-Ass, which exploits for the sake of it (and also, more importantly, has a way with humour) but there are tasteful ways of doing it and there is a severe lack of taste here.
Even more, there is a severe lack of direction in this woman's vision. Awful stuff altogether.
