Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Sam C — 02 Oct 2013
This is a left-field strong film. What I mean by that is that it really does begin to open up during its runtime and become a powerful film. There's at least one scene I'd consider a pure masterpiece, and oddly enough it involves Britney Spears.
Surprisingly, it is able to preserve its narrative cohesiveness even with the heavy emphasis Korine puts on stylizing the whole thing. Vivid colors, thumping music, repetitious dialogue, and hypnotizing camera and editing work give this film a surreal aesthetic value.
After reflection, the story could probably be picked apart, but taken for what it is I think this is a very bizarre triumph.
