Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Patrick L — 26 Oct 2013
"Critics have called this a cult hit, Really? It should have been called "Girls Gone Nuts"".
DVD Movie Review: Spring Breakers.

Written and Directed by Harmony Korine (Mister Lonely).
Starring: James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine.
Movie critics across the US and Canada have been divided over the spring break dramedy "Spring Breakers", it was hailed as a cult classic by some critics, while others hated it.
"Spring Breakers" is not a good movie but it does contain an interestingly, wacky performance from James Franco. Franco plays Alien, a local rapper and gangster who is wealthy and has huge amounts of illegal drugs and firearms.
"Spring Breakers" stars former Disney tween stars Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Benson along with Rachel Korine as four college students (who have been best friends since kindergarten) who save enough money to go to St. Petersberg, Florida. Why do they want to go to Florida? They want to have the most unforgettable spring break trip of their lives. The girls attend wild beach parties where they do drugs, drink a lot and engage in reckless behavior. All four girls are soon arrested and they are soon faced with two nights in jail. The girls are suddenly bailed out by Alien (Franco) and he promises to give the girls the most thrilling and exciting time of the their lives.
Alien questions the girls about themselves and he gives them details about his childhood, his wealth and of course, he tells the girls that he is a distributor of illegal drugs and firearms. The girls go to his mansion, where he shows them the wealth from his illegal activities. Alien is sort of like a young Scarface only with metal-teeth as he describes his life as the "American Dream". Brittany (Benson) and Candy (Hudgens) are soon embraced by Alien as his "soulmates" and they begin a sexual relationship with him.
Throughout most of "Spring Breakers", I wasn't uncomfortable watching four girls (wearing just bikini tops for most of the movie) party hard, doing crack and hooking up with other men, I was mostly bored throughout this movie because all of the alleged humor is not very funny, the lives of these girls are not developed well and they are not very interesting.
Writer and Director Harmony Korine's film does not feel like a candy-colored fever dream, it feels like I was re-watching one of my weird bad dreams. Some people will say "Spring Breakers" is challenging and provocative but not me. This movie is insane and sick.
