Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Turner E — 13 Nov 2013
This film has become quite controversial over the last few months. People seem to really love or really hate it, with some criticize the depiction of teenagers having sex and committing acts of violence; while others praise it for its style and direction. I'm personally somewhere in the middle. Unlike most people, sex and violence usually don't bother me unless it's really disgusting or distracts from the story. Films that depict brutal acts of rape or murder I tend to dislike unless there is a deeper meaning behind them then just titillating the viewer. Here I don't think the sex is too inappropriate or extreme. It seems fairly realistic in its depiction of promiscuity and sex without ever glorifying the actions of the protagonists. I just wish the film delved into the psyche of these girls in more depth instead of relying too much on style and camera tricks. Spring Breakers is an interesting film, it just never goes deep enough to be thought provoking. The film is mostly style that only scratches the surface of it's protagonists and their motivations.
Final Grade: B-.
