Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Mike D — 27 Dec 2013
Harmony Korine's portrait of party-crazed college coeds, 'Spring Breakers,' is a sad excuse for a drama that is apparently intended to appeal to young adults and the recent class of grown up Disney Channel fans.
In 'Breakers,' three wild college girls (Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine) and one token "good girl" (Selena Gomez as the appropriately named "Faith") embark on a journey down to the Sunshine State for spring break, which is made possible by their toy gun-fueled robbery of a local diner.
As expected, the girls get into all sorts of trouble when they arrive, and behave badly, but the fun really doesn't start until they come across would-be rapper and drug dealer Alien (played brilliantly by James Franco).
Regardless of its intentions, 'Breakers' ends up being a hypersexed, over-the-top violent extravaganza and feels very off considering the fact that a few of its stars are just a few years removed from gracing the screen in 'High School Musical' and 'Wizards of Waverly Place.
' The dialogue is lazy, and the audience spends a long time questioning why Gomez's Faith is friends with the other girls in the first place. The only real highlights of the film come in Franco's acting and the Skrillex-infused soundtrack - everything else is pretty much garbage.
Whatever creative points Korine was trying to earn with 'Spring Breakers,' they surely were negated by the poor plot, sub-par acting and all around ridiculousness that transpired onscreen.
