Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Jared S — 12 Jan 2014
What an odd movie Spring Breakers is. Harmony Korine dances the line b/w exploitative debauchery and genuine satire though the stylistic direction is consistent. Spring Breakers feels like a "video game" it feels "like a dream y'all"... I was constantly questioning my feelings and gut reactions to whatever was thrown at me, but honestly through the entirety of the movie I was glued to my seat and the screen.
As far as the acting is concerned, the girls hold their weight, but Franco truly transforms into a believable reincarnation of Gary Oldman's Drexl Spivey from True Romance. Oh, and I couldn't believe it when I saw Gucci Mane first appear. There's a lot of repetition and unbelievable dialogue but hey y'all I said this was like a dream, didn't I? Still not sure what to make of certain scenes, but all in all it felt just about right.
I mean it's as if Korine is saying,"wouldn't you really want to do this? You know, if there were no consequences or anything?" It's so wrong, but isn't that the point? I mean just thinking about James Franco's character Alien and how he embodies the lifestyle of exactly that. It's criminal indulgence.
