Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Alfredo S — 29 Oct 2013
Well that was... something?
Alright, yes, I guess I get the (attempted) satire against this current generation's fucked up behavior, in that most prefer to snort dirty snow off the tits of a sleazy, black, cellulite-ridden hooker, rather than "succumb to society's expectations" or whatever, okay I get it.
But the message is, for lack of a better phrase... well hidden. perhaps too well hidden behind the repetitive scenes that make these girls rank lower and lower on my list of favorite anti-heros. the actions portrayed are too "out there" to be relatable and/or believable for the intended audience, so all you end up with is a popcorn thriller about a bunch of girls literally scoring with the biggest tosspot doucher in the Western Hemisphere and [SPOILER] getting away with a massacre in the end that only left me liking them even less. (the music and editing though, as well as the repeated dialogue, definitely a plus).
An admirable attempt, but if only the message was clearer, i.e. not drowned out by the constant partying and bass that really tested my subwoofer (which is a plus, by the way), this might've gone down next to The Cabin In The Woods in my list of favorite satires. instead, this film will only leave partygoers with a disturbing senario clipped into their heads, only to be inevitably forgotten the next Saturday night when they try out a game of meth-beer pong against the neighborhood basehead.
Exponentially better than Project X.
