Review of Spring Breakers (2013) by Ro C — 18 Jan 2014

I knew going in that "Spring Breakers" was going to be a crazy little ride, but I still wasn't prepared for what the film turned out to be. Overall, it's a huge commentary on our YOLO-driven society and the stupidity that comes with media-based ADHD. Technically, this film blends a plethora of camera and editing tricks, which plays into its critique, which is then hammered home by the severe lack of character development. The characters are interesting enough to hold the viewers attention... well, James Franco's Alien is at least. Everyone else is presented as a pawn and while the character-driven part of me is hurt a little by it, the point of "Spring Breakers" is that the atmosphere and morals of the MTV generation harbor a lack character. It's a wonderful commentary and a film that cannot be unwatched.
