Review of Spork (2010) by Mikael K — 16 Mar 2011
Here's a movie that's completely nuts. In a great way nontheless! âSporkâ? tells the tale of Spork, a 14 year old intersexual girl who lives in a trailer with her alcoholic brother. Spork leads a tormented everyday existence in a school where everyone, especially the popular girls, make their best effort to torment her.
âSporkâ? reminds me of Todd Solonz's âWelcome to the Dollhouse,â? which was a truly accurate and compelling film about school cruelty. âSporkâ? takes a different approach by creating a surreal comedy that is constantly over the top and completely odd. It's not as sharp as âDollhouse,â? but it's in some ways more innovative and unusual, and most definitely more fun. And I think all the people who know the role of the outsider will be reached by Spork and her difficulties.
This is ultimately one of the most joyous films I've seen in a while, and refreshingly different, without being one bit pretentious or tedious. Nice work.
