Review of Spooks: The Greater Good (2015) by Carl S — 13 Feb 2016
Spooks: The Greater Good is a spy film being based on the BBC tv series, does follow the typical clichà (C)s for the genre but in a rather dull direction and filled with one dimensional characters. I have never seen the BBC tv series, only to know they do have some easter eggs thrown in the film and a couple of new characters that is played by Kit Harington. It has a plot that may have been used before in other spy films. MI5 transport team carrying a terrorist leader Qasim (Elyes Gabel) escapes the convoy by the help of an unknown traitor in the counter terrorism department. MI5 leader Harry Prince (Peter Firth) tries to get help from Will (Kit Harington) to try to trace the clues and find the traitor within their agencies and to capture Qasim.
The plot does have a couple of twist thrown in there, but the script is shallow with the characters and did not give any room for developing them. The film does introduce Will being chased by a couple of bad guys in a restaurant and MI5 operatives pick him up around the corner. There is no characterization with these characters. It just jumps from one set piece to another as Will finds some undercover information from Harry and moments later get chased by MI5 operatives that are trying to apprehend Harry. The direction is also boring and filled with unexciting chases and twists seeing Will following leads and than the leads escape for another chase sequence. By the time the film reaches the ending and Harryâ(TM)s plans were set in motion to reveal the mole in their agency. It was hard to care for the characters, when there was no developing story.
