Review of Split Second (1992) by Eric R — 13 Feb 2011
"You Get Laid Every Night, and You Run Five Miles Every Morning?".
I hadn't seen Split Second since I was probably 11 or 12 years old; yes, my parents were awesome and let me watch stuff like this. Its Rutger Hauer as a hardened badass cop who walks to the beat of his own drum. Rutger Hauer is such a great genre actor, and hes fantastic as a cop after a serial killer which eats the hearts of its victims. He is a man obsessed with stopping this serial killer. The setting: London 2008, a world where it has rained for 60 straight days, the city is flooded and disease is rampant. Its essentially a post-apocalyptic world, with some crazy disco ball lighting and lots of colors. There really is some cool unique lighting decisions throughout. I find it hard to believe that this film wasn't intentionally self aware with some of its decisions; like the fact that Rutger Hauer walks around cursing like a sailor, smoking like a chimney, and eating junk food. Not to mention that he is teamed up with the stereotypical bitter opposite; a expert on serial killers who learned everything in school. Its like everything was taken to the extreme, and Hauer embraces it.
