Review of Split (2017) by Coyla C — 06 Apr 2017
It's been in fashion for awhile now to hate everything M. Night makes, but even his failures have felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the contrived formula of a studio creation. The twist with "Split" is that M.Night zooms in and looks at the mortal terror of regular people captured by a monster, an actual supernatural being. Most of M. Night's movies are fantasies, scary bedtime stories that are truthful but not always rational, like a Franz Kafka novel. And that's what makes them special. "Split" is suspenseful, frightening, and terrifying at times, yet there's very little on screen gore. Since Night doesn't use throw away characters, like most horror movies, it's much harder to watch them.
Suffer. This is how he can make the slightest gesture much more disturbing than an outright blood-fest. This movie is going to stick with me for awhile, and I'm excited about the possibilities.
