Review of Split (2017) by Alec C — 18 Mar 2017
It had a lot of promise in the beginning, that's for sure. I wasn't a fan of the plot going right into the kidnapping, I thought that if we saw hints and evidence of Kevin planning to kidnap them we would've had a scarier vibe.
Anyway, most movies do do that so maybe it was a good thing that this movie didn't. Kevin and his 23 personalities are for sure scary, but after the first encounters with him we can sort of predict what he will do next, especially since he is only one personality per scene that he is in.
Casey says that he can predict their every move no matter what they do, but that's only with Dennis, the lead possessor of Kevin. With any other personality, especially Hedwig, the girls, particularly Casey, perform escapes that are not at all predicted by Kevin; in fact, they just happen to run into a dead end before Kevin catches them again.
Also, what's with the whole beast subplot?? I don't like how they transferred the story to being psychological realistic to supernatural; that part threw me off. And the ending of Kevin and Casey's encounter was a bit disappointing.
Having said all of this, the actors and actresses did AMAZING and I commend McAvoy and especially the girl who played Casey for the amount of talent they clearly showed. It was a good movie, but I'd only rate it 3 out of 5 stars.
