Review of Split (2017) by Marshall C — 05 Apr 2017
***Possible spoilers***.
A little disappointed because I was expecting it to blow my mind being from M. Night but I felt I already spoiled it for myself by seeing the trailers showing the Beast's true form as well as Kevin describing his appearance and abilities prior to his transformation in the film. I kind of wanted to be surprised at his supernatural abilities rather than expecting it and then seeing what I sort of expected.
Overall, it was alright but it felt incomplete and lacking in unique events to fill the plot to give less of 'being dragged out into something longer than it should be' sensation. I feel like this movie could have been more if made into a longer movie by condensing these events into the first 60 minutes with the next 90 minutes would be the girl who survived somehow joining up with Bruce Willis and taking the Horde down by the end of it, deciding not to blow her uncle's brains out and turning him in instead, and concluding that person like herself who has experienced trauma, faced it, and overcome it is stronger than one like the Horde who broke down into a plethora of personalities because he is inherently weak. She manages to use here strength/ability to bring out Kevin, have a short but deep talk with him about how they handled their trauma differently but long enough for him to take down the Horde by killing himself, and then she's adopted by Bruce Willis and lives a relatively normal life (a seemingly happy ending till you catch a glimpse of Mr. Glass before the credits roll). I hope something like this comes out along these lines but I'd really want my mind blown so I'd hope for something better. Well, whatever the follow-up movie turns out to be I'd definitely go see it.
