Review of Split (2017) by Ranzel V — 04 May 2017
M. Night Shyamalan re-establishes himself as a credible suspense generator with this film after making so many blunders in most of his career. The premise is downright intriguing already and he effectively makes use of it, keeping me in nail-biting suspense most of the movie's duration. Protagonists are more intelligent than usual, especially the abused-since-childhood, aloof girl Casey Cooke, who compliments her wit with hunting instincts instilled by her late father. And yes, I haven't forgotten James McAvoy at all. He's the main showcase in this as he convincingly portrayed 5 or 6 of his character's alter egos. The movie's climax had left me stupefied for the reason that I find it somewhat preposterous and absurd (I can't tell what that is because that's a spoiler). Knowing Shyamalan, he's cooked a surprise plot twist at the end (sparingly shocking like in "The Sixth Sense", most of the time downright ludicrous like in "Signs") and this time he dropped one that has left me...confused; confused because I did not get it, couldn't relate to it. After doing some digging on the internet, though, everything made sense. Overall, I like the Shyamalan who made this flick and hopefully he won't get lost on his way again and instead will keep his traction in place.
Score: 4/5.
