Review of Split (2017) by Joseph O — 27 Sep 2017
I always want to give M. Night the benefit of the doubt no matter what, he has made incredible movies before (the Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, most of the Village) and I strongly believe with the right ingredients, he can return to form. Now, I don't think Split is as good as the Sixth Sense, or even Unbreakable. But it's a definite upgrade from After Earth and the Happening, which makes me optimistic about his future movies.
I've never been a big fan of McAvoy, everything I had seen him in beforehand simply helped 'serve the film', and he didn't stand out to me nor did I question his character. (Yes, even as Professor X). But seeing him in such a demanding role gave me a newfound respect for him, and I think he did a really good job. The girls, aside from Anya Taylor-Joy, ehh. Not so much. But they're not in it too long. I will strongly defend, however, that this movie is an acquired taste and if you're not into this kind of movie to begin with, it's not going to be an enjoyable experience. Regardless, I'm excited to see Glass when it comes out.
