Review of Splinterheads (2009) by David H — 13 Nov 2009
Quirky little comedy but overall pretty vapid and pointless. the main character is a napoleon dynamite spin off and the girl is one of the most one dimensional female characters ive seen in a movie, in a looong time!
The whole premise is even simpler! some slacker loser is conned at a gas station by said hot blonde, and then over the course of a few "totally coincidental"(and not plot lacking force by the writer!) events, they end up going "geocashing" together! oh what fun and totally original. too bad that's the lamest thing i've ever seen.
We're supposed to believe that this girl came from a relatively "nowhere" home and traded her previosu life to go on the road with some skinehead jackasses who work at carnivals around the country. plllleaase. and to top that off, we see her (quite awkwardly and without reason) slowly drawing to the main protagonist.
Not to mention, whoever thought making the premise of a movie revolve around a dupey little carnvial would be a good idea, should not be able to give out any more ideas!
So im a little harsh on the story, but aren't most indies supposed to have a reasonably touching and believable story? or am I just missing something?
The title doesnt even make much sense. Galaxy, played by Rachael Taylor, even explains what a splinterhead is. person who works or hustles others for money, etc. She only hustles the main character two times, and then after that, we never see the hustling part. when the hell did we see Justin, played by Thomas Middleditch, con someone or hustle for money? hmmm....clever move guys. lets make a quirky title for our indie. itll raise alot of questions for the potential audience members.
Its nice to see the unlucky loser get the girl in movies, but this just felt unrealized and really forced! it was almost too easy for this guy. look at all the clues! girl is constantly winding up in places with main character, her boyfriend is a total douchebag(and to her too), and main character keeps humiliating himself in front of her yet she totally loves it..
Christopher macdonald was at least amusing to watch as the desperate cop, and former boyfriend of Justin's widow mom. the way he keeps trying to nab Justin so he can arrange a date with his mom is funny. and then near the end, he turns out to be a genuine guy and not some creep lookin for action.
I think the ratings basically say it. its not very good. its a nice little movie you can watch with your girlfriend I guess on a saturday afternoon but its doesnt really gdo much beyond that. the amazing steve was an amusing subplot but he didn't have much relevance either! so he tells the main character some girl advice, and is there for comic relief.
The whole ending sequence with his hyped up water event, has NO relevance to the overall line of action involving the main characters. just totally pointless really. and maybe the director was trying to raise the tension but I didnt really see the effect.
Seeing a 116 year old man saying words like stiffy, condoms and pussy was amusing but not all that original and just a strange character quality.
Film classmate told me he and other film students could've made a better film than that. I agree.
