Review of Splice (2010) by Gilbertl — 06 Jun 2010
SPOILERS AHEAD: Smart monster movie with amazing creature effects. I felt repulsion and then compassion towards the creature as it developed, both physically and emotionally. I thought the movie was a sly criticism of modern-day parenting.
Starting with Ms. Polley's indulging the creature at every turn, defying all common sense, and then changing her parenting philosophy when the 'offspring' decides to act out on her own.
Mr. Brody, on the other hand, is a distant parent until the creature is old enough to be intellectually, emotionally, and physically interesting. The couple discuss their parenting plans in the build-up of the plot and references are made to Ms.
Polley's emotionally disturbed mother. Then their subconscious parenting desires come to the forefront when the birth of Dren occurs. Definitely worth watching.
