Review of Splice (2010) by Jeffl. — 04 Jun 2010
Part Cronenberg, part Corman, this briskly-paced, well-written sci-fi/horror/comedy stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley (both excellent) as a pair of scientists who genetically engineer a monstrous new creation by splicing together human and animal DNA.
In the tradition of all great Frankenstein stories (not to mention King Kong, Creature From the Black Lagoon, etc.) the true heart of the story lies in creating real sympathy for a creature (called Dren in the film and played by Delphine Chaneac) who may be a deadly monster but who is simultaneously a misunderstood child.
An entertaining creature feature full of blood, gore...and a little bit of heart.
