Review of Splendor in the Grass (1961) by Sue Jean J — 16 Aug 2007
This movie is not for everyone. But if you overlook the overly dramatic performances of some actors (and understand that this was made in 1961-not 2007) I think people could really appreciate this story of growing up and moving on.
Wood, one of those overly dramatic performers here, is completely relatable as a lovesick person who is treated unjustly by society's standards for girls.
Beatty expertly plays the young, rich, Bud who is conflicted by his father's demands and his first love. Ultimately, he does not give either of them what they truly want, but the final message is that it's okay.
Overall, this is one of Elia Kazan's masterpieces, along with Streetcar Named Desire, and East of Eden.
