Review of Splendor in the Grass (1961) by Jon O — 03 Sep 2010
I have just been lucky enough to buy and re-watch this great movie. Brilliant drama about the insanity that is love, and the power of passion coupled with the frustration of that passion not being consumated.
It is probably hard for viewers in 2010 to understand the great pressure on women to remain "good girls" back then, I'm sure most modern women would have willingly succumbed to Warren Beatty looking like that, but that's not the point.
And that's what gives the movie its poignancy. The knowledge of how different their lives would have been if they had given in to temptation makes the movie interesting and thought provoking - is it better to keep your morals intact and lead a noble life, or to just go with love when it happens knowing it may never happen quite that intensely again??? As for the ending, let's just say it never fails to draw a tear or ten!
