Review of Splash (1984) by Ashley T — 29 Mar 2009
Since childhood, I've been fascinated with the mythology of mermaids, and Splash has been a staple of my life longer than I can remember. Only as an adult though have been able to truly appreciate the whole film; even though its plot is pretty basic, I was too young to fully understand it when I was seven.
The story perfectly blends elements of comedy, drama, romance, adventure, and fantasy, while maintaining a realistic and modern New York sensibility. The casting is spot on, and it's amusing to think of the impact this film had on each of them so early in their careers.
Tom Hanks in particular had only a failed TV series under his belt. Who knew?
