Review of Splash (1984) by Hales A — 18 Jul 2009
Is this seriously becoming my favourite 80's romantic comedy? I think so.
I adored this movie and Tom Hanks in a Ron Howard picture is just the icing on the cake.
* John Candy as the irresponsible, skirt-snooping, but good natured, kind-hearted brother. His role as a supporting actor can't be given enough credit especially the final speech to Tom.
* Eugene Levy as the disgruntled, disgraced academic, desperate to regain the respect of his exalted peers. His desperation, thankfully not ultimately getting in the way of his better judgement and humanity and deep regret. I applaud Mr. Howard for seeing fit to make Walter Kornbluth a sympathetic character who comes to redeem himself in the most beautiful fashion. " I'm really a nice guy ... if I had friends you could ask them. " lol.
* Daryl Hannah portraying a genuine, endearing, naivete, and also perhaps ranking as one of the 80's top leading ladies.
I could go on all day but ultimately one simply needs to see the film to understand my adoration fully.
