Review of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) by Zack R — 07 Jun 2011
Right out of the gate, the biggest strength about Spirit is how it manages to tell a captivating story with as few words as possible. It's a nice, child-friendly tale of freedom and how easily it can be taken away, with a nice allegory for the educated about the domination of the "Wild West" by America and its effects on the animals there.
The animation and artwork are utterly stellar, with the backgrounds in particular being a source of awe. The only (minor) contention is the 3d animation that's mixed in with the 2d Animation, especially the train sequence. It's jarring in the worst way.
Overall, Spirit is an excellent film, and one that needs to be held in much higher regard than it currently is.
