Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Santiago O — 05 Jan 2019
Animated? Eh. A huge twist on the original Marvel Universe? Jesus Christ... This movie had is all going against it from my point of view. When it comes to movies, I prefer something that I can understand before seeing it, more following a pre-formed outline than figuring it out as it goes. This movie seemed the opposite. But boy, oh boy, did I enjoy it. The seamless manner in which they were able to introduce so much information, but have it make instant sense to the audience, was excellent. I was initially worried about the potential lack of character development of the Spidermen/women/pigs, and while there is only so much you cando with characters introduced beyond the halfway-mark onf the movie, the development of Peter B. Parker and Spiderwoman were excellent, Peter Porker and Spiderman Noir still having substantive roles in the movie. If I was to be very critical, the anime-inspired Spidergirl was a bit lost. The other characters were useful (loved the bit with the uncle), and there just seemed to be a level of plot-action-character cohesion that DC and some Marvel Franchises *Cough* Thor *Cough* haven't been able to master. Not to mention the beautiful animation. It didn't feel childish as I had originally feared: it felt like art.
The animation is excellent, the storyline enthralling, and movie thoroughly enjoyable. I'd definitely pay for another overpriced movie ticket to see it again.
