Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Cathrina%20 D — 01 Jan 2019

That wasn't a movie, it was a love letter-to the comics, graphic design, New York, hip-hop culture, and most of all, Spider-Man. I was lucky enough to have seen a preview snippet at Adobe Max, but it did not prepare me for the audio-visual immersion of one of my favorite animated film of the year.

From the blasting of Biggie Smalls, the hiss of the spray paint cans, use of half-tone and over print design effects, for the first time in my life, even having consumed countless hours of Marvel animation and films, this is the first time I felt the soul of the comics and Stan Lee's love of New York City were truly brought to life.

There were so many moments that felt so right, but none more than Stan's scene. It was more than a cameo. It was his send-off. Thank you, Stan, for creating the hero for all us nerdy outcasts and to the animators and director for "taking a leap of faith" and surpassing what is expected of animation and film for that matter.
