Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Alan C — 30 Dec 2018
A year ago when the first trailer came out for this, I thought it looked awful. It looked bland and dumb and just a movie for diversity in movies (which isn't bad) but that shoved it down your throat without a good story or acting.
I thought that Black Panther would do the same thing, and I was mostly right (it was enjoyable at times and the acting was great, but the CGI was terrible and they did shove it down your throat). However, this film exceeded my expectations, it's easily one of the best spiderman movies ever! There were many pros; it was a great story with some emotional and heartfelt moments and great twists, like *****SPOILER***** Miles Morales uncle being The Prowler, one of the supporting villains, the original Peter Parkers death, and Doc Ock.
The Doc Ock thing I didn't see coming but at the same time sorta did, because I seen in the cast list that Doc Ock was voiced by a woman, and I was hesitant to except it unless it made the story better, and it definitely did, the twist with her was awesome and I loved it because of how well done it was.
The score was amazing and the new original songs like Sunflower and What's Up Danger have been stuck in my head for a long while now, in fact, as I'm writing this review I'm listening the latter song.
The villains, as I said earlier, were all great - Kingpin has been on a role this year as one of the best villains to ever villain, first being awesome in Daredevil and now this. His backstory is tragic and you can understand why he's doing what he is doing without necessarily agreeing with him, similar to Thanos from Avengers: Infinity War.
Prowler was actually one of the most threatening villains I've seen, as the sound effects for his menacing roar were well done, and the twist with him was great as well. Scorpion was okay, however, he didn't really do much.
The heroes were great as well - Miles Morales was awesome and I love how fleshed out his backstory was and he was funny and memorable, as was Jake Johnsons Peter Parker. Spidergwen was also awesome, and has a two great introductions.
Spiderman Noir and Spiderham were great as well, but very sadly underused (I was really hyped for John Mulaney to be playing Spiderham, so I was a bit disappointed). Peni Parker, however, I'm not a big fan of.
She was of the only parts of the movie I didn't like. The pacing was mostly good, but the final fight scene was a bit short, however, it was one of the best chekhov's gun moments I've ever seen (*hand lands on shoulder*.
.. "Hey") and it was great fight scene as well, as were the other ones throughout the movie. The animation was really well done, and was one of the things I had really been against after seeing the first teaser, but seeing the finished product it was so awesome to look at, it was like it was jumping straight out of the comics.
The greatest scene has to be when Miles takes his 'leap of faith,' one of the best movie scenes ever, I got goosebumps while I was watching. There were some cons, however. Like I said, I think the ending was a little rushed, and I also didn't like Peni Parker.
I think Spiderman Noir and Spiderham should have had more screen time. I also didn't really like how kingpin was animated, he was too much of a square. In the end, this was one of the greatest spiderman movies ever that offers alot more to add to the spider-man mythos.
Ranks second under Spiderman: Homecoming. Solid 8/10 - A /90%.
