Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Charles B — 15 Dec 2018
Probably the best Spider-Man movie to-date.
And this is coming from someone who doesn't really care for the Miles Morales character much.
This movie treats it's subject material with the proper seriousness, but the underlying, irreverent humor that is the heart of Spider-Man is shot through the entire production. Basically look at the Wolverine movies for "serious/grimdark" and the Adam West Batman show for the complete opposite end of the spectrum.
Spider-Verse plonks itself down in a nice, comfortable median spot between the two and just works it for all it's worth.
The art style is great for the chosen medium. VERY immersive, though a few scenes you can tell were prepped for 3D conversion (I see stuff in standard 2D because 3D causes me eye strain and headaches). But, overall, it worked just fine.
The voice acting in here was so transparent and just fit. So much so that praising it would require me to point out areas of inconsistency where there really weren't any.
All in all, a marvelously put-together film.
I'll be going to actually see it again.
This goes to show that, when Sony doesn't interfere too much, it CAN do these movies justice.
