Review of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) by Karen S — 16 Dec 2018
I will foreward this by saying I am not a fan of superheroes. Or at least I thought I wasn't. Then I saw this mesmerising artwork. This is what animation was made to do. It pushes the medium in ways my brain couldn't quite compute and a fast paced rollercoaster of animated abstractness balances perfectly with very sensitive and very real moments.
The tender scenes seem realer than live action through the filter of the style. There are moments you forget it's even animated and moments you couldn't believe it is anything other.
Despite it being more 'animated' than any cg movie I have seen, It is also a rich story where the dialogue isn't clunky and maintains a balance of sincerity and meta jokes.
Here at last is an animated movie from a major studio directed squarely at adults. This is not a movie for young children and is paced to serve the older audiences of super hero films. This is backed up by the loud five year old behind me * mommy I want to leave I dont want this movie!!!*. For an older overstimulated generation to lose themselves in this visually hectic and wonderful feast is great, but I hope the marketing as a PG movie will make parents of younger children think twice.
