Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Tal G — 08 Apr 2018
This was kinda dull.
What can I say? It was a fairly standard affair. Nothing that happens in this movie will surprise you in any considerable way. This was the safest movie possible, which is kind of Marvel's deal. The next pristine Marvel piece.
Tom did a pretty good job with Peter, but other than that, the rest of the cast was really mediocre, including Keaton. Also, why the hell is may being pushed as a hottie? That's just weird.
The story was very standard, and therefore very forgettable. It was actually a bit of a weird take on the Spiderman character as well. One of the biggest motivations for who Spiderman is, is usually uncle Ben. Here it seemed like Peter was just really looking up to Stark, and there were no signs or clues that Ben even exists in this version of Spiderman. It felt like Spiderman got sterilized for his integration into the MCU. A big chunk of this movie rests on the back of Iron Man and his established relationship with Peter from the Civil War movie. So there's that safety thing again, having to rely on Iron Man to make this movie stand on some legs.
The action was extremely disappointing. There was no sense of danger. Peter was barely hurt throughout the entire movie. At the end we just see a bit of a busted lip. Really? The big action scenes felt like plastic. No sense of awe or even a sense of tension. Compare that to what Peter looks like at the end of the first Raimi Spiderman movie.
The humor was extremely hit-or-miss, but mostly miss. A ton of failed attempts at "hilarious" jokes that were meant to make me laugh out loud, that only managed to be awkward and try-hard.
The cinematography looked like it was out of a standard TV show, the colours were mostly dull, the CGI was at times strangely bad, and the music was place-holder tier.
I got the impression that this movie was afraid to stand on its own, and afraid to take itself seriously. No confidence. A bunch of other weird but minor elements that bothered me were stuff like Flash's character, and whatever the hell Michelle was supposed to be in this story. Just weird choices.
Overall it's extremely average, a watch-it-and-forget-it action movie. Extremely passionless project.
