Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Carlotta 4 — 09 May 2018
Surprisingly good! I'm not really a spiderman fan, skipped all the other spiderman films and also skipped this one until a certain scene in "Infinity Wars" made me intrigued and decide to see if it's worth a look after all. Glad I gave it a shot because this was a likeable, cute, and fun film.
I don't even have major plot qualms with it. Like if they HAD made him use Spiderman to show off to the classmates that would have been a problem, but they wisely addressed the issue and did not pursue it. The villain was a generic Marvel "baddie" but they smartly created the human element by associating him with a character the audience DOES care about, making this otherwise generic villain suddenly and SURPRISINGLY terrifying for our main character.
I also appreciated how the film had a more hometown feel to it. We've seen so many cities and skyscrapers being destroyed at this point that it doesn't really affect us, but that little jaunt where he's running through a neighborhood breaking shingles and gates made the homeowner in me cringe. XD Smart way to make mindless destruction more relatable again.
Overall, it just made me smile and happy that I watched it. Well done.
