Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Random V — 23 Jan 2018
Spider-Man sticks to his roots as a street-level Marvel Knight, all the while getting into trouble saving people and kicking baddies to the curb. Victor Toomes adds depth to the narrative as a construction contractor who loses his bid for scavenging alien technology, and decides (rightly or wrongly) to repurpose the salvage to sell on the black market.
Peter's relationship with Victor's daughter puts it all on the human level, so that despite our amazement at their powers and abilities, we still have to consider the ethical/moral dilemma of survival and prosperity.
So yeah, this is a spectacular popcorn movie, but it also puts us at the street level of the people, and how they are affected by crazy alien invasions, gods, monsters, and super robots, and how power can corrupt if not handled responsibly.
