Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Tjaw — 14 Jul 2017
How this movie has a score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, I'll never know. Spider-Man: Homecoming is chock full of cringe-inducing lowbrow humour, millennial-targeted technological nonsense, unnecessary pop culture/Internet references and gratuitous swearing.
As for the characters, Peter himself isn't too bad but his best friend is an insufferable douche, his girlfriend is completely bland, the villain doesn't get enough screen time, Aunt May is absolutely unlikable (and way too young) and the other characters are almost worthless.
As for the story, I could barely make sense of it and there are dozens of useless plot threads that go nowhere. Despite a lot of adult language and sex references, the tone of the film is so childish; there's way too much slapstick and several serious moments are interrupted by shallow jokes.
The film can never make up its mind about whether it wants to be for the kids or adults and this inconsistency made the film a painful experience. Even worse, the film just goes on and on and on, and after the climax there's still loads of boring talking to get through before it ends abruptly with an F-bomb.
Utter crap.
