Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Jak-Luke S — 23 Jul 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming nails most issues the MCU has had of late. Firstly, it fixes the long running promblem of a weak villain with a fantastic performance from Keaton that has both depth and weight. Secondly, it fixes the third-act issue that many of these superhero films fall flat, which is a CGI monstrosity, but here it's far more personal and restraint leading to a far more engaging climax.
The performances are great Holland plays the titular character perfectly and grasp the nerdy yet vibrant character well. Supporting cast are also decent with Tomei, Favreau and Downey Jr. adding great dynamic to Parker, with the latter never overshadowing or overused.
Yet, it's actually the newcomers such as Zendaya and Batalon who steal the show. The script is well written and the John Hughes moments are both clear and refreshing if not a little on the nose. However, the film at times looks incredibly bland and the direction feels like a novice throughout and hasn't really got an eye for action and I hope next time around they go for perhaps a stronger director.
