Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Amir L — 14 Jul 2017
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) does not feature world-ending stakes like most MCU films, but it makes up for a more personal story about maturity and self-discovery. Is it the best Spider-Man film? I don't think so, but it arguably features the best portrayal of the iconic web-swinging hero so far.
Tom Holland embodies the witty character he had established in Captain America: Civil War (2016) while adding layers of vulnerability, naivety, and self-doubt. The film borrows elements from teen comedies to craft a unique hybrid that is deeply engaging and relatable.
Homecoming's villain, Adrian Toomes/The Vulture, is rather compelling. Much like Spider-Man 2's Doctor Octopus, Toomes is quite menacing with his mechanical wingsuit. But underneath the costume, he is very much a human being.
Thanks to a great performance by Michael Keaton and a complex characterization, the Vulture stands out from a list of generic comic book villains and is arguably one of MCU's best yet. The film translates an iconic Spidey moment from the comics to the big-screen, thanks to Holland's incredibly moving performance.
Also, It's hilarious. A feel-good, teen movie. Very entertaining.
