Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Yariel H — 12 Jul 2017
Sony made the best decision ever in giving Marvel Studios the reigns on this iteration of Spider-Man.
Let us start with Michael Keaton's turn as Adrian Toomes' Vulture. Seething equal parts Keaton-cool, and an oddly charming pent-up anger rooted in a character who actually cares about something, Keaton's Vulture has, in my opinion, overtaken Loki's spot as top Marvel villian in the MCU thus far. And with a super-sinister bullet. Tom Holland is effortlessly likeable as easily the best version of everyone's favorite friendly neighborhood man-arachnid, played with an almost overwhelmingly degree of respect and sincerity to the character. The casting of the infinitely reliable Marissa Tomei is a refreshingly fun take on Peter Parker's Aunt May, providing solid backup to an already impressive cast; the chemistry between everyone is outstanding. The action sets in Homecoming are as good as it can get, giving audiences the smoothest bantering-whilst-brawling-evil-goons Spider fights in the MCU. And they're a TON of fun. Let us not forget Tony Stark (RDJ) plays a fine supporting role as the snarky Iron Man, assisting Peter in his growth as a bonafide superhero throughout, adding to the shared universe Marvel has been curating for a decade now. Welcome home, Spidey, you belong in this universe.
