Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Bradley J — 22 Jul 2017
Action movies/superhero movies need to learn that setting their climactic fight scenes in the night, awfully distorts the choreography of the fight and leads the viewer to feel dizzy and whip lashed. I actually found it difficult to watch several of the action scenes and that isn't a good thing when the movie has many of them.
Tom Holland is a solid Spider-man, in fact he might be the best Spider-man, but he is stuck in a movie too routine and unexciting to truly leave an impression. Another issue I had with the movie is the treatment of the female characters.
They all fulfill stereotypes. Zendaya has solid comedic timing but is let down by a script that forces her to be the emo, hyper-anti everything kind of character that puts her into a debbie downer box.
Aunt May serves little purpose to the film, though the last moment with her is hilarious. The film does understand the playful nature of the character and excels during the set pieces, that require him to put his spidey powers to smart use, but at the dramatic climax of his arc, he gains powers that seem a bit too far fetched for a hero like Spider-man.
His abilities naturally are more tactical in a way that is the opposite of Hulk or other super-strength heroes, however, he is granted this strength at a critical moment, that derails the moment. Homecoming has great spirit and perhaps in further installments will shine brighter, however, Homecoming nearly misses the mark in a year with much better superhero offerings.
Rating: 60.
