Review of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) by Sensei T — 07 Jul 2017
MoViews - Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The Amazing Spider-Man is finally Amazing. Even though the Maguire series weren't half bad, the Garfield reboot was an emotional disaster. This film follows the recently created Marvel Universe with perfect accuracy, and fits in like a seamless puzzle piece in the franchise with a jewel that is well acted, well scripted, and well crafted.
Thankfully, we are spared yet another origins story. Instead, we are treated to an awesome opening through the excitement of 15-year old Peter Parker and his recent involvement with the Avengers. And although spidey has never been in my top favorites (mostly because the original cartoon was too dark and psychedelic for my taste), this movie redeems him in a way no other medium has. Peter Parker is insecure, anxious, funny, and a hormone-ridden teenage screw-up - which is fantastic for his kind of superhero.
Although slightly different from the original comics, the introduction of the Vulture (played by Keaton, who in my opinion plays villains much better than he does superheroes) keeps the essence of the character - a revenge-ridden man due to being crossed by his employer and losing his job.
One of my favorite pieces of the film is the absolute non-apologetic nerdiness that it seeps. Watch Peter's t-shirts - each one is a masterpiece of nerdy puns. We truly see a nerdy teen toting superpowers and a super-suit - with all the angst of adolescence. Masterfully performed by 21 year-old Tom Holland, spidey takes on a new life that we haven't witnessed before.
The story is one of 'coming of age' - with hard lessons that the young man learns the hard way, making the right choices in the end. There are a couple of unexpected surprises, a fantastic, weird and endearing character in Michelle (played by Zendaya), the inevitable cameo from Stan Lee, and the end-of-credits scene that you all should stay for and watch. The tie-in to the Marvel universe comes complete with appearances from Iron Man, Pepper, Captain America, and a mention of Vision. The studios also make fun of their own rights of the franchise, since there's a throwback to the famous upside-down kiss scene - and plenty of planted seeds for what looks like a rich series of sequels for the future: the inclusion of hints like the appearance of a character named Mac Gargan - which is Scorpio in the Spider-Man comics. And all this, of course, on top of Spidey's appearance within the Marvel universe series (Avengers: Infinity War) from the Disney branches.
Hands down, my opinion: Don't Miss It (4 out of 4). He Dicho.
