Review of Spider-Man 3 (2007) by Victoria N — 01 Sep 2014
Spider-Man 3 was one of those films that I wanted to see so badly. Why is that: because I really liked the Spider-Man franchise so far even though it just consisted of 2 films and most of the time, it was just flat out stupid . But unfortunately, it fell flat. With an overstuffed plot, underdeveloped characters and too many clichà (C)d moments, a huge disappointment to the franchise is what you're going to get. Heck, even the CGI looks terrible at times. It's a downward spiral for the trilogy that should never be viewed by real comic book fans.
So we start the story with a news story of Spiderman saving Manhattan from danger and how he feels this has benefited him for a while. He has finally decided that he wants to propose to MJ so at the peak of her success, they can have something to look forward to in the future. After viewing MJ's show, Peter comes face to face with Harry, who is still mourning over the death of his father and will never plead for mercy. Meanwhile, we're then introduced to Flint Marko, an escape convict who was prisoned for killing Ben Parker. After running away from the police, he accidentally ends up in a scientific research lab where they're testing out sand. Due to some complications in the lab, he is created into the Sandman. Then we go back to Peter, who is now in a fight with Harry who is posed as the Green Goblin. Unfortunately Harry ends up hitting his head on a led pipe, and suffers from severe amnesia in the aftermath. So therefore, he forgets that Peter was even his enemy. Then we go back to Peter and MJ and their relationship. She feels upset because a critic said that her performance was pretty mediocre, which unfortunately leads to her getting fired from the production. And because of her fail, she has a brewing jealousy for Peter because he actually does something with his life, and feels he is not there for her enough of the time. And also at some point, Spiderman kisses Gwen Stacy after he saved her life. Because of this, she starts to get it on with Harry, but realises that it's very awkward between them, making Harry quite angered. Then Peter finds a black suit similar to his red one, which alters his personality so drastically that it makes him more concentrated on lust for power rather than caring for people who mean the most to him. Then he will eventually come face to face with the villain we were all looking forward to, Venom. So basically with 3 villains lined up, he had to be able to fight them all off and save those who mean the most to him.
To be completely honest, this reminds me of a film that was directed by Uwe Boll at his very best. I was massively disappointed by this film, and this seemed like the film which could've been very interesting, diverse and have more developed action sequences. Sadly, it was just a mess and it hasn't really got a clear storyline. As most people may agree, the biggest problem is the overabundance of villains, and none of them are fully developed nor interesting to look back upon. I was very betrayed when Venom wasn't even shown for more than 10 minutes, and he is an awesome villain from the comics. Topher Grace as Venom was actually quite painful to watch because he's not the right actor to play such an evil villain. But it's not just the villains that are underdeveloped, most of the main characters are as well. MJ having no personality nor reason to be interested in her is still a blank slate, and instead of really standing up for herself, she sulks at these situations and hopes that others can sort it out for her. However, I will give her credit for the fact that she actually does show self respect for herself and understands that she comes first, but that's not enough to save for how bland she is.
It's a shame that a pretty good trilogy had to end on a sour note, and unfortunately, that's how it will always be.
