Review of Spider-Man (2002) by Ben D — 22 Dec 2013
This was the first movie I saw in theaters and naturally I was mesmerized. One thing that is severely underrated is Sam Raimi's direction. Being a horror director, he makes every moment with the Green Goblin frightful and that is in part due to Willem Dafoe.
Even today, when Norman Osborn talks to himself in the mirror, I always get chills. The atmosphere is not depressing and it shouldn't be! Every time I watch this movie, excitement flows through my body.
Danny Elfman's score only perfectly represents the established mood and atmosphere- it is arguably the best score of the 21st century. Uncle Ben's death scene is filmed so well, it is a tear-jerker.
The only things that are bad about this movie are the cheesy jokes e.g. "Fly web!" and Mary Jane's lack of depth. She is one of the most meaningless lead characters in film. With all of its problem's, Spiderman one of the best superhero movies ever made.
