Review of Spider-Man (2002) by Josef Z — 16 Feb 2015

It's cast is fantastic,Toby' perfect for the role and yeah better than Garfield. William Defoe is a blast and so much fun as the green goblin, he's so over the top that it's great. Rosemary Harris is Aunt May, she leaps off the page and into the movie.

James Franco as Harry is perfect, the way he and peter are friends is just brilliant. Kirsten Dunst as MJ could've been better but it doesn't bother as much as others point out. The action is a little dated but the way they mix CGI with stunt work was a good decision.

In all honesty the movie was the best way to start the Spider-man franchise. Raimi did his homework and boy did it be one of the best superhero movies of all time. The soundtrack by Danny Elfman is fantastic, I am a big Danny Elfman fan and you can see why.

He is one if not the best soundtrack composers of all time. The Spider-man them is a blast to listen to and in the title sequence I never skip it, the music is so great that it reminds me of Spider-man and no soundtrack in the future of Spider-man movies will top it.

The plot is pretty simple, here the powers come before the characters and that could be seen as a good thing. Get us to the good stuff and don't leave us hanging. Raimi knew that he had to put powers before the characters so we wouldn't get bored.

Also it follows a formula which goes like this Mj is in danger so Spider-man has to save her. The movie uses the old damsel in distress to create a relationship with the hero but I excuse it because it was 2002.

And Spider-man defeats the bad guy and we go home. Of course this was meant to be a big summer blockbuster and it was a lot of fun. Another thing I noticed was that Spider-man is in this upbeat lighthearted world and we have to associate that with Spider-man and not the Dark knight.
