Review of Spider-Man (2002) by Ben T — 15 Jan 2016

It's weird to think that the first spider-man movie is nearly 15 years old. When this film came out it was a really big deal, this movie was a huge success and it was one of the superhero landmarks.

However this film gets a lot of hate from people who love the amazing Spider-Man because I guess some people can't like the amazing Spider-Man and the original Spider-man trilogy. This film is a lot of fun.

The acting I think is actually really good, Tobey Maguire is in my opinion still the best Spider-man. He pulls off the dorky teenager very well and he's also great as Spider-man. I also like some of the subtle stuff he puts into his performance, I also think he does great in the dramatic moments.

Kirsten Dunst while her character is a bit weak and has to constantly be saved I still think she does a good job at the acting however she could have been a better written character. James Franco is pretty good as Harry yet he isn't in the movie as much as I remembered however I love how we see him start to turn bad.

Willem Dafoe is so creepy and really good as the villain. The Green Goblin is a bit of a crap villain, his costume is very silly and over the top and he has absolutely no motivation as he gets what he wants done very quickly.

It's also great seeing him play the split personality and leads to some unintentionally hillarious moments. The actors who play Aunt May and Uncle Ben are both great and I love Uncle Ben's speech to Peter.

The best part of this film is J.K. Simmons as Peter's boss, he's so funny and has the best lines of the film. The writing is a bit over the place, while there's some great lines, like the responsibility speech, however there are so many cheesy and cringe lines.

Speaking of cringe the romance in this film is really bad. Some of the lines between Peter and Mary Jane are so cringeworthy. However this is quite a well directed film by Sam Rami, yes this film is cheesy, yes it's very silly and over the top however Sam Rami did a really good job here.

This film is also very well filmed, I love the shot of Peter climbing up the wall, also the shots of Spider-Man swinging around look great. The action is a bit hit and miss, the end fight scene with Spider-man and green goblin is great, it's very brutal and really good.

However the rest of the action is a bit meh, it's servicable but it's very overly cgi. The cgi is also all over the place, the spider vision looks amazing but the rest of the cgi is very rubbery and fake.

This movie is also cheesy as, this film has a very silly and over the top tone which fits the movie perfectly. The Danny Elfman score is brilliant and fits the film perfectly. This is such a fun movie to watch and while it's not perfect it's still a lot of fun.

Spider-man is far from perfect but it is a good movie and gets a lot of unnecessary hate. B+.
