Review of Spider-Man (2002) by Jazzmin M — 14 Jun 2016
Who doesn't love Spider-Man, one of the most famous pop cultural icons? This film gives this amazing webslinger justice. I still enjoy Tobey Maguire's performance as the titular character. I also enjoy Wilhelm Dafoe as the Green Goblin for his over-the-top acting and amusing silliness.
James Franco does a decent job. I absolutely love J. K Simmons as Jameson. He killed that role. The story has a flowing three-act structure, and the musical score is very memorable. However, the film does have some flaws.
The actions scenes are fun, but some of them look a little too rehearsed and a bit phony. The CGI wasn't the most impressive, but it's forgivable since computer-generated imagery wasn't as developed as it is now.
But the biggest problem with the film is Mary Jane Watson. She is so freaking boring. I like Kirsten Dunst, and I give her credit for trying to make her character interesting, but Mary Jane is nothing but a tool.
She only there to make Spidey look good. There's just nothing really that intriguing about her. I also don't know why they chose her character instead of Gwen Stacy. She was Peter's first girlfriend after all.
Even with these issues, I still love Spider-Man. It's stupid, silly, comic book fun that is truly a classic.
