Review of Spider-Man (1977) by Alex H — 15 Aug 2014
It's uninspired and seems to think that, because we've seen it all before, we don't need to see it done interestingly. And for something titled "The Amazing Spider-Man", you'd think it'd take greater inspiration from the source material of the same name, instead of throwing it out the window in favour of generic invented bits of story. The film also feels like it's deliberately attempting to confuse audiences into thinking it's part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, when in reality, it's nothing but a cheap copy cash-in.
A mess of contrivances, The Amazing Spider-Man serves as an example of how even nice cinematography and a modern, trendy cast can't save an unnecessary mess of a reboot that feels way too pretentious and serious for its own good.
